Black Friday

I’m writing this on the infamous Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving where multitudes of Americans lose their minds in shopping frenzy. I myself don’t partake in the event, and find the whole thing a bit on the creepy side, but don’t blame those brave souls who choose to fight the crowds. Who am I to judge the parent who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford gifts for their kids unless they did? I just wonder why it has to be this horrible, stressful event.

The thing that gets to me is when you hear about grown (supposed) adults who revert to behavior that’s lower than any of our primate cousins would exhibit. The fighting, pushing, and sometimes tragic violence is beyond bizarre considering the reason behind this season of giving. Now I’m not Christian, but I do enjoy celebrating Christmas, and I’m pretty sure this isn’t what Jesus had in mind when he said, Ask and it will be given to you;  search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. Not, “Go forth and pummel someone to get the best deal at Walmart.”

Unfortunately the materialistic mindset that we’ve been handed through the media and corporate messaging has perpetuated this mess, and it’s up to us to hand it back. How? Through conscious giving. And when I say “conscious” I don’t mean that little Sally can’t have the Easy Bake Oven® or Tonka Truck® she wants, and instead has to be happy with a donation to Save the (Fill-in-the-Blank) in her name, but that we understand the motivation behind what we give and that we teach these same principles to our children. Giving Sally what she wants so she won’t be a brat is just going to make her more of a brat. But if giving Sally that Tonka Truck® for being a generally good kid feels good to you, then that’s a whole different story. Though the occasional gift of Save the (Fill-in-the-Blank) in her name doesn’t hurt either, just sayin’.

And what about those kids whose parents are out there pushing and shoving and exhibiting bad behavior in pursuit of the all-mighty bargain? What kind of adults are they breeding? My hope is that they eventually find some understanding of what they are doing. All we can do is start with ourselves by increasing awareness, and let it serve as a way to get back to the point of giving: joy.

...........................................................................................................

From Over There:
“Motivation behind giving is more important than the gift itself. It is important to acknowledge why it is that one gives to another at certain times or during certain situations. To give may represent an actual article, or it may be giving of time, or of advice, or of a compliment. Regardless of what is given, ask yourself why it is you give. Ask yourself if it is simply for the joy of giving, or from the desire to be accepted, or for manipulation. Whatever the reason know this, the intent behind the giving is imprinted on the gift. The receiver receives the intent along with the gift. This is why at times when a gift is received – although it may appear pleasant – it does not bring joy to the receiver.”

Stay Connected

This week’s message is ironically about not using “electronic devices” (Facebook, email, instant messaging, texting, etc.) as your main source of human interaction. It’s ironic because I wanted to announce a new Facebook community page I created. I have to admit, I’ve definitely had the experience of being pulled into the vortex of Facebook, and done my share of mindless googling (sorry if that sounded dirty), yet I combine that on a daily basis with real in-person conversations. Like most technology, the internet and all of its offerings can be a great thing, but it can also distract from living life out in the real world if you let it. All things in moderation, I suppose.

This being said, I just created a new Facebook community page that I have lofty dreams of turning into magazine someday (more on that later). My idea is something like The Sun meets Common Ground, with a touch of Rolling Stone thrown in. I know, a little all over the place, but that’s the point. I want a forum for everyone to express what’s important to them, what they love, and what inspires them. I get excited hearing people talk about what they’re passionate about. It fuels me, and I like to think it fuels everyone else as well.

I’ve been playing around with a website for this idea for a while, but haven’t been able to settle on anything. This led to the next easiest outlet, Facebook. So for all of you on Facebook who’d like a place to showcase your talents, your upcoming events, or simply your thoughts, head on over to [Random] spirit and hit the “like” button. If you’re not on Facebook, maybe it’s a good time to join?

And while we're on the subject of community, wishing everyone a very Happy and Deliciously Healthy Thanksgiving!

From Over There:
“Humankind suffers from the misconception of separateness. To remind the spirit of this interconnectedness it is imperative that a network of community is created. Through this community there will be support throughout the challenges of life, and sharing during times of celebration.

During this current age there are more ways to connect than ever before, yet greater numbers are feeling alone and disconnected from humanity. This illusion is intensified when an individual retreats from true physical human interaction and relies solely on electronic devices for connection. Allowing these methods of communication to be the primary source of contact diminishes an individual’s accountability and creates relationships that are superficial.

Components needed to create greater human intimacy are vocal sounds, eye contact, and the sensation of touch. It is the responsibility of the individual to only use electronic devices as additional tools to enrich communication and to build a stronger community, not as a substitute for personal interaction.”

You Can Go Your Own Way

One wonderful thing about our country is our right and freedom to speak our minds. This, of course, can also be a double-edged sword as there are those whose intent is to diminish, manipulate or isolate certain fractions of society through their words. These past few months as the Presidential election grew near, we saw an acceleration of verbal lashing from both sides and from those not associated with either party. It would be wonderful if candidates won without name calling or dirt digging, but that may be an unrealistic dream on my part. Politics is not a clean sport.

All this aside, I do believe that we as individuals can rise above such divisiveness and live our lives on our own terms without bashing anyone else to do it. The very big trick is to truly subscribe to the old idiom “live and let live”. Simply put, live your life and let others do the same. This can be a difficult thing when you have very solid ideas about what is right and what is wrong. I’m not talking about turning a blind eye to heinous things like child abusive or overt corporate greed (the list of things could unfortunately go on and on here), but instead, personal lifestyle choices, religious choices, style choices, the way we set up our home environment, the type of work we choose to do…again, the list could go on and on.

What can you do today to start living from this mindset, to live your life and let others live theirs? What can you allow for others that you may not choose for yourself? What, if anything, keeps you from embracing this concept?

Here’s to creating the life of your dreams…

From Over There:

“One does not need to rebel in order to resist conformity. To rebel is to fight against those forces which are viewed as threatening. To resist conformity is to simply follow one’s own desires, values and personal tastes without allowing society’s norms to dissuade through non-acceptance. To resist conformity is to follow one’s own path regardless if it has been previously forged, or a new road needs to be created, and to do so without fighting those who choose another path."

Myself, Included

And so here we are on the eve of another historic event in US history, the election of our 45th President. This time around has been pretty volatile on both sides. There’s a lot at stake for each of us as we all hold on tight to those things we find important and necessary to lead happy, productive lives. In the spirit of inclusiveness I try very hard not to get “too political” when writing my newsletter, but sometimes it’s extremely difficult. Truthfully, what some choose to focus on and fight for baffles me, and I at times find it horrific. But we all have our reasons, and thank God/Goddess/Universe/Nothing we have the right to express our views.

What I hope is that each of you truly find it in your heart to vote for the candidate that you feel may unify us, treat us ALL as EQUAL citizens, and support our inalienable RIGHTS as human beings.  Whether you’re black, brown, or white, whether you’re gay, bi, straight, or transgender, whether you’re Pagan, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, Buddhist, Agnostic or Atheist, whether you’re rich, middle class, or poor, whether you live in the liberal San Francisco Bay Area, or the conservative Bible Belt, please vote with your heart, not your anger or fear. What the world needs now, is love sweet love, not finger pointing, name calling or reduction of ANYONE’S rights. Please people, please, can’t we all get along?

............................................................................................................

From Over There:
“Lack of inclusiveness is a sign of fear. This fear runs rampant within all global cultures as each hold onto perceived values and feelings of safety. This deception is brought on by the illusion of separateness. Feelings of separation are created as one holds fast to ideals, then forming the ideals into identity. Identification with these ideals forms what is thought to be the self, yet is not the self. It is a viewpoint or lens at which to look through life and nothing else.

If these ideals are challenged, then it is as if the very self is in peril, fighting for existence. When one is able to embrace values and ideals built upon a foundation of inclusiveness, then one is able to accept variants in the opinions of others without feeling threatened, and opens them more fully to broadening their own viewpoint. This broadening perspective reduces fear, and diminishes the illusion of separateness. This understanding of interconnection reduces violence, and leads to greater compassion throughout the human race.”
